Who was Thomas Nolan? Former IMPD Reserve Officer Kills Wife and Himself in Murder-Suicide

An Indianapolis man identified as Thomas Nolan shot his wife, two teenage daughters, and then himself in a gruesome murder-suicide Monday night.

Nolan killed his wife, Ashley, and injured his two daughters, one of them critically, before killing himself in the shooting at their home in Indianapolis’ south side.

Following the tragedy, Nolan was revealed to be a former IMPD reserve police officer with over two decades in law enforcement.

IMPD were called in regards to a domestic dispute with a weapon around 9 p.m. on Monday, August 12th in the 600 block of Watersonway Circle, which is northeast of Bluff Road and Edgewood Avenue.

When they arrived on the scene, they heard gunshots.

Officers entered and found two teenagers who had been shot but were thankfully still alive.

One teen was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, while the other’s condition was described by an IMPD spokesperson as “stable.”

Thomas Nolan and his wife were found deceased in the backyard, both from gunshot wounds.

According to reports, Nolan was a reserve deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office from 2003 to 2004. Then he became a reserve IMPD officer until he resigned on May 15, 2024, after 21 years in law enforcement.

Nolan had worked for the Perry Township Schools district as well, and his two daughters were Perry Township students.
