Father and Daughter Killed, Mother Seriously Injured in Boating Accident on Gasconade River

An Owensville man and his 7-year-old daughter were killed in a boating accident Sunday night on the Gasconde River near Pointers Creek in Osage County.

Reven Newbound, 30, of Owensville, was traveling upstream on a 2002 Gatorboat with seven people onboard when it hit a root wad causing the boat to hit a rock bluff.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, Newbound and his 7-year-old daughter were killed.

His wife, Samantha Newbound, was seriously injured, along with the couple’s three other children – a baby boy, a 4-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old girl – sustaining similarly serious injuries.

Taylor McClure, 21, of Bland had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

All the victims of the crash were taken to University Hospital for treatment.

According to the MHP crash report, all the children were wearing life jackets while the adults were not.

A GoFundMe has been started to raise money to help the Newbound family in the wake of this terrible tragedy.

Hailey Barch, who organized the fundraiser, said it is to help the surviving members get back on their feet once they recover.

The post read: “Hey guys my name is Hailey Barch, Miranda Albrecht and I wanted to throw something together for Sam and her family. On Saturday, September 1st, the Newbound family experienced an unimaginable tragedy while boating. Reven and their 7-year-old daughter tragically lost their lives in the accident. Samantha and their three other children were severely injured and have been hospitalized in serious condition. While they are expected to make a full recovery, the journey ahead will be long and challenging. We want to ensure that financial burdens are the last thing on Sam’s mind during this difficult time. Any support you can provide would be greatly appreciated,”

The fundraiser had practically met its $20,000 goal at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Division is investigating the crash.
