A promising future was cruelly cut short for the family of Damon Murray when news emerged late Sunday, 28th April 2024 that he had been shot and killed!

Only 21 years old, Damon Murray was well on his way to building a great future for himself and his family utilizing his talents.

He had played for Hoboken High School and played Division 1 football for Rutgers University where he was a walk-on.

Murray was currently working as a teacher’s aide when he met his untimely demise.

On the night of Sunday, April 28th at Third and Harrison Streets, at Hoboken’s West Side near the Hoboken public housing complex where Murray had lived, his life was cruelly cut short.

He had apparently, gotten into a fight with a friend over gambling and the friend decided to pull out a weapon and shoot him.

According to the Hoboken Police Department, they received a report of shots fired in the area of 320 Marshall Drive shortly after 11 p.m. on the fateful night.

As typically happens, officers were dispatched to the location and came upon quite a sad scene of one adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.

Murray was hit in the abdomen by his friend following their argument and was in pain from the shot.

He was carted in a private vehicle to Jersey City Medical Center but there was to be no miraculous recovery as he succumbed to his wounds.

“It is with a broken heart that I inform you all that last night, April 28, 2024 a young man’s life was cut short on HHA property on Kyelia’s Way by a senseless act of violence,” wrote Hoboken Housing Authority Director Marc Recko in a message to residents.

Murray was well known and respected in his community, having graduated from Hoboken High School in 2020 and made it to the Rutgers University football team.

At the time, he was hailed by his former High School who congratulated him for making the Rutgers University squad.

“…We are extremely proud of Damon and can’t wait to see what the future holds for him!❤️🏈” the Hoboken High School Class of 2020’s page on X (formerly Twitter) wrote.

Murray, or NuNu as he was locally known, was also mourned by a post from a local Hoboken blog on Instagram.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Damon “Nunu” Murray ( @__10reazons ), a former Redwing/Rutgers alumni and beloved member of our community,” the post said.

“He was an exceptional athlete and he was an overall great, respectable young man., who was admired and loved by all.

It is quite the tragedy to see such a young and promising life cut short before it ever gets the chance to enter its prime and show to the world what it has to offer.

Damon Murray’s life might have been cut short but his story lives on forever, immortalized by those who knew and loved him and who would keep his memory burning till the end of time.
